LVMS Bullring racer steps up

A Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring driver stepped up to run last week’s Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway. Stan Mullis started 38th and finished in 33rd place. It was the second straight year the 48-year-old Las Vegas businessman joined forces with car owner Carl Long for the Iowa race. Driving for a team so strapped for cash that it once brought a marijuana sponsorship to the track, Mullis still was running at the finish despite clutch and electrical problems. “It’s a pretty big thrill. When you’re racing (against) a (Team) Penske car, it’s a real eye-opener.”

Lights technical director Jose Luis Sanchez Sola gets suspended by USL

Lights FC technical director Jose Luis Sanchez Sola was suspended by the USL. The team said he touched a fan after its 4-0 loss to Phoenix on Wednesday. He will have to sit out eight games and will not be able to appeal the penalty. The earliest he can return to the Lights’ sideline is August 4. It was not a violent action and he asked the fan who had been heckling him to say it to him directly. Clearly that’s not acceptable. It’s not condoned. We accept the penalty.

Police: Suspect shot Las Vegas teen in modified ‘Russian roulette’

A Henderson teen found dead Friday was shot during a modified “Russian roulette” game. Police say 17-year-old Matthew Minkler was left on the kitchen floor of an adandoned Henderson home. According to police documents, Jaiden Caruso, 16, and Kody Harlan, 17, returned to the house shortly afterward, but only to clean up the scene and hide the body inside a downstairs closet under a plastic sheet. Detectives say they never called 911, or “attempted to render aid.” It was only after a short vehicle pursuit Friday evening that police learned of the shooting and later found Matthew’s body. Caruso is facing charges of murder with a deadly weapon and robbery, while Harlan faces charges of accessory to murder after the fact, destroying evidence and robbery.

The burglars fled and were seen heading north through the property. Las Vegas police quickly set up a perimeter and launched an extensive search of the area, but the suspects were able to escape. It was unclear if the burglars got away with anything of value. Several items, under the watchful eyes of the police, were seen on the ground near the home’s main driveway. Neither Newton, nor his wife, were injured. The Newtons were not available for comment.

Jerry Izenberg witnesses another Triple Crown winner

Henderson resident and Hall of Fame horse racing writer Jerry Izenberg witnessed another Triple Crown winner on Saturday. Justify became the second horse in three years to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Izenberg has witnessed five Triple Crown winners: Secretariat in 1973, Seattle Slew in 1977, Affirmed in 1978, American Pharoah in 2015 and now Justify. He said the jury is still out on where Justify will rank with the other great horses he has covered. But Izenberg says no horse compares to Secretariat, at least in his mind. “Honestly, you’re talking about absolutely great horses with these five Triple Crown winners. I’d have to say there’s Secretariat, and then there’s the other four horses — and that’s not to denigrate the other four horses.”

Joel Huiqui uses national team experience to lead Lights FC

Lights FC defender Joel Huiqui learned leadership at the highest level. Huiqui captained Mexico’s 2013 Gold Cup squad. He has been rostered 14 times by his country’s senior national team. Now Huiqui wants to use that experience to lead the Lights. For me, it was really exciting. The moment I got the jersey on my skin, when I was lining up in the dugout to go out onto the field, when I was lining up and my national anthem was playing, it was incredible.
