Centennial’s girls track and field team won its eighth consecutive Class 4A state championship on Saturday. Bishop Gorman’s boys track and field team won its first Class 4A state championship. Liberty’s Gabby Carson equaled a state record in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 6 inches. Bishop Gorman’s Jalen Nailor (left) won four state championships over the course of the weekend. Rancho’s girls 400-meter relay team posted a new state record time of 45.84.
Palo Verde defeated Basic 4-2 on Saturday to win the Class 4A state baseball title. It was the first state baseball title in school history. Nate Bartlett drove in a pair of runs for the Panthers. He also had several key defensive plays, including a game-ending double play. Jaret Godman went the distance, allowing five htis, to get the win. Godman had four wins and three saves in Palo Verde’s eight postseason wins.
Southern Nevada teams did not have the best run in the state tournament. First Basic lost to Douglas Thursday. The Wolves were eliminated by Shadow Ridge on Friday. Shadow Ridge lost a three-run lead in the seventh to Spanish Springs on Thursday, then got bounced by Douglas on Friday. Boulder City and Pahrump Valley were both eliminated from the Class 3A tournament Friday. Needles and Laughlin were eliminated from the 2A tournament. Indian Springs got bumped form the 1A tournament. Pahranagat Valley is the only team still alive entering Saturday.
Allegiant Air’s top executives had big drops in compensation last year amid lower profits. Chairman and CEO Maurice “Maury” Gallagher received about $2.3 million in total compensation, down 35 percent from 2016. Allegiant President John Redmond received around $1.86 million, down 82 percent, and Scott Sheldon, chief operating and financial officer, received $1.9 million, down 37 percent. Allegiant’s profits fell 11 percent last year, and executives’ compensation dropped even further due to smaller bonuses and stock awards.
Local racer Riley Herbst has named to NASCAR Next, a list identifying young drivers on the fast track to stock car racing stardom. It was the second year in a row the 19-year-old racer was named on the list of nine drivers. Others who have been named NASCAR list include current Cup Series regulars Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, William Byron, Chase Elliott, Erik Jones, Kyle Larson, Daniel Suarez and Bubba Wallace. Herbst is a descendant of Las Vegas’ famous off-road racing Herbst family. After watching their brothers win state baseball titles two years ago, two Basic softball players want their own ring. Mikayla Berg is the younger sister of former Basic pitcher Trever Berg. Angela Santillanes is the younger sister of former Basic infielder Christian Santillanes. Both helped Basic take home the 2016 state title, and Wolves followed it up with another ring in 2017. Now the softball team has a chance win its first state title after winning the Sunrise Region for the first time. First pitch is against Douglas at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Manogue High School in Reno.
Basic’s baseball team is looking for a third consecutive state championship this week. Senior pitcher C.J. Dornak lends plenty of experience. He has made four appearances and earned two wins in the last two state tournaments. Dornak is 7-0 with two saves and a 0.72 ERA this season. For his career, Dornak is 20-1 with six saves and a 0.67 ERA. Garrett Giles also is playing in his third state tournament, and should lead the offense.

Las Vegas police identified the woman they said threatened neighbors with a skillet Saturday night. Officer Ondre Wills, 23, shot at Sommer Richards, 34, multiple times on Big Sur Drive, near Nellis Boulevard and Desert Inn Road. Police responded to the area after receiving reports that the woman was armed with a shovel. Police said the woman chased neighbors and a security guard. Wills got between Richards and the others and repeatedly told her to drop the shovel. The woman instead turned and moved toward a person who was standing nearby before the officer fired shots. Police said she bit another officer as he attempted to render aid. Richards remains in serious but stable condition.
Billionaire David Tepper to Reportedly Buy Carolina Panthers Tepper, who is a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is expected to formally purchase the team on Tuesday. Current owner Jerry Richardson announced his plans to sell the Panthers in December following allegations of workplace misconduct. According to multiple reports, Tepper will purchase the team for around $2.2 billion.

A 24-year-old man was shot and killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex Monday night. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. The man was taken to UMC where he died. A spokesman for the North Las Vegas Police Department said the shooting did not appear to be random. Police are looking for the shooter, who remains on the loose.

Shadow Ridge knocked off Palo Verde twice Saturday to claim the Sunset Region softball title. Palo Verde had beaten Shadow Ridge three times in the regular season, and once in the playoffs. Shadow Ridge won 3-2 in the first game, then outslugged Palo Verde 10-8 in the second. Shadow Ridge last won the region title two years ago, but has never reached the state title game. The Mustangs will get their chance next week when they head to Reno.

of relief in the second game to secure the 1-0 win. For the tournament, Godman had three wins and a save.
He didn’t allow a run in 15 1/3 innings. Bryce Robison combined with Godman on a three-hitter
in the second game. It was the first region title in school history, and secured a berth in the state tournament.

Clark County firefighters battled a house fire early Friday morning in Henderson. The house, located near Volunteer Boulevard and Executive Airport Drive, was fully engulfed in flames about 2 a.m. Shifting winds sent massive plumes of smoke across the southern Las Vegas Valley sky. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter to Return for ‘Bill & Ted 3’ More than 25 years after the last installment, Reeves and Winter will be back playing the titular characters in ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film was written by the original creators, Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, with Dean Parisot pegged to direct the film. We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again. Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm we’ve got a dream team! The film has been in the works for years, with both Reeves and Winter saying repeatedly that they would like to reprise their roles as Ted and Bill respectively. ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ is currently in preproduction and does not have a release date yet.
Centennial beat Durango 12-0 on Wednesday, but that was only part of the story. Centennial righty Amanda Sink struck out 20 batters, a state record for a seven-inning game. It was a pitchers’ duel early, with Durango’s Trinity Valentine matching Sinkl through three innings. But Centennial broke through in the fourth, and put it away in the fifth. Centennial will play Palo Verde on Wednesday, and Durango will play Bishop Gorman.
