Las Vegas construction employment

Developers are putting up subdivisions, apartments, retail centers and other projects across Las Vegas. But the local construction industry is still nowhere near as big as it was during the bubble years of the mid-2000s. 63,900 people work in construction in Southern Nevada. Employment has nearly doubled since early 2012 but is still far below the peak of 112,000 in mid-2006. It’s hard for me to imagine such a surge of population that you would need to build housing, retail, schools and other things on the scale that was happening in 2005. — Ken Simonson, chief economist, Associated General Contractors of America

A Las Vegas police officer has been demoted after failing to stop the death of an unarmed black man. Now former sergeant Travis Crumrine was in charge of officer Kenneth Lopera during the death of Tashii Brown last May. Lopera shocked Brown multiple times before placing him in an unapproved chokehold. Records show that originally, department officials accused Crumrine of failing to intervene by not ensuring that Lopera let go of Brown after he gave the officer an order to do so. Ultimately, Crumrine was demoted to police officer on Nov. 1 for neglect of duty and for failing to turn on his body camera during the interaction.

CDC Warns People to Steer Clear of Romaine After E. Coli Outbreak The Center for Disease Control and Prevention told people on Friday to stay away from the lettuce after a multi-state E. coli outbreak. 53 people have been infected across 16 states, with 31 people hospitalized. The CDC says the outbreak came from lettuce near Yuma, Arizona, warning consumers to avoid any lettuce grown in the area. Product labels often do not identify growing regions; so, throw out any romaine lettuce if you’re uncertain about where it was grown. This includes whole heads and hearts of romaine, chopped romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce.

The second one is this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, a restrictor-plate track at which Gragson has little experience. “Talladega, that one might come back in a ball or something. Man, I’m not too good of a restrictor-plate racer just because I don’t have a lot of experience.”

Keeping the ice cool at T-Mobile Arena

Temperatures are expected to reach the high 90s for Knights playoff games against the San Jose Sharks at T-Mobile Arena this weekend. The Golden Knights are making adjustments to keep the condition of the ice in tip-top shape. “The whole idea is that ambient temperature and inside temperature have a relationship,” said T-Mobile conversion manager and ice maker George Salami. Sometimes when it is humid outside, fog can form on the ice. During the 1975 Stanley Cup finals between the Buffalo Sabres and Philadelphia Flyers, a dense fog formed at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. The Sabres won in double overtime on a shot by Rene Robert that Flyers goalie Bernie Parent — and most in attendance — did not see.

Lights FC striker Samuel Ochoa has started the season in a slump. Ochoa has no goals or assists in the team’s first four games. Still, he doesn’t plan to change up his routine to get going. It’s just a matter of time. We all go through a few games without scoring a goal. Except (Lionel) Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo. Coach Isidro Sanchez also believes Ochoa’s time is coming. When Ochoa goes that many minutes without scoring, yes it’s a lot for my striker. … But each day, each minute, he’s getting closer.

The Lights FC has seen yellow plenty this season. The Lights are tied for the most yellow cards in the USL with 18. They’ve played fewer games than the two teams they’re tied with. Defender Joel Huiqui leads the club with four yellows. We are the most yellow-carded team. Why? Because we are the most intense. So there’s a very thin line between being intense and being on time and being intense and being one second late.

Golden Knights license plates delayed over design

Golden Knights fans will have to wait a little longer to show support for their team on a license plate. Officials with the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles say the department has gone back-and-forth with the team for six months over the design of the plates. Once Knights submit a design, it will only take a few weeks for the DMV to manufacture, distribute and solicit sales for the plates. The plate’s Knights insignia, logos and messages may only take up roughly one-third of the specialty plates, leaving enough room for “Nevada” at the top and the license number. The plates will cost $37, followed by a $10 annual renewal fee.
