Rancho smacked four home runs on Saturday
to beat two-time defending state champion Basic, 16-4. The Rams took advantage of five errors to score seven unearned runs. Layton Walls hit a solo homer to kick off Rancho’s eight-run second inning. Jimmy Gamboa went the distance, allowing 3 ER to pick up the victory.
He threw first-pitch strikes to 21 of 22 batters. Rancho now is 8-1 in the Sunrise League, a game ahead of second-place Basic.

Former UNLV athletic director and men’s NCAA Tournament chairman Jim Livengood has been working on the concept. Livengood’s idea: To play all four NCAA women’s regionals in Las Vegas at the same time. This year’s women’s Final Four was exciting and was played in front of sellout crowds. The four regionals attracted only modest turnouts. The NCAA currently has a rule prohibiting championship events from being played in Las Vegas.

Basic defeated Coronado ace Tatum Spangler, who threw a complete game, did not allow and earned run, and struck out 11. The win moved Basic to 8-0 in Sunrise League play with a 2.5-game cushion in first place.

A man died Friday morning after Las Vegas police shot him during a traffic stop. Officers were on their way to another call when they pulled over a vehicle for reckless driving. Police say the man was holding a gun when he got out of the vehicle, and at some point threw the gun to the ground. As officers told the man to put his hands up and stay away from the weapon, he got to his knees and grabbed it. The man was shot by police after he pointed the gun at officers.

On April 22, fans can bring their four-legged friends to Cashman for Bark in the Park. The 51s will be gone on July 4, but they will host a fireworks extravaganza the night before. Sept. 3 will be the final home game at Cashman Field.

The fashion show to benefit UMC’s pediatric unit was held March 22 at the Four Seasons hotel. The event was the Clark County Medical Society Alliance’s 17th annual fashion show fundraiser. They raised over $100,000 through a silent auction and ticket sales. Helpful additions to the pediatric unit will include parent care packages and treatment room additions. There were over 450 attendees who also participated in a silent auction. The fashion show featured over 25 looks provided by Diane Von Furstenburg with professional models flown in from the New York fashion house. DVF donated a portion of proceeds from the show’s online sales to UMC’s pediatric unit.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of UFC superstar Conor McGregor by the New York Police Department after an incident at a media event at Barclays Center on Thursday. A spokesperson for the NYPD wouldn’t confirm or deny the claim. “We have no information on this matter at this time,” an officer in the public information office said. “We are currently investigating the situation.” The group was allegedly in search of Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is fighting Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 223 on Saturday. McGregor’s group can be seen on videos posted on social media throwing chairs and security barricades in the bowels of the arena.

NASCAR has released its 2019 Cup Series schedule. It is exactly the same as the 2018 schedule. Every race will be back on the same weekend. Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s two race dates are March 3 and Sept. 15. The September race will once again open the NASCAR playoffs. The only thing that changes in 2019 is the off weekend for Easter. NASCAR will announce its Xfinity Series and Truck Series schedules at a later date.

According to police, April Shepard struck two cars parked outside Tom Williams Elementary School. Police do not suspect she had been drinking alcohol, and are “waiting on the confirmation to what it was.” No injuries were reported, and no students were involved. She faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence with accident. Shepard is the 12th district employee arrested this school year, according to Review-Journal records.
