Arie Luyendyk Jr. never raced in Formula One despite what his TV bio says. But he did drive in the Indianapolis 500 one time. And before that, he drove in seven Indy Lights races for Henderson’s Sam Schmidt. Schmidt said Arie Jr. showed skill behind the wheel. Just not as much as his father. Arie Luyendyk Sr. won the Indianapolis 500 two times. Arie Sr. was Sam Schmidt’s teammate and was the only driver to visit Sam in the hospital after a terrible crash. “When I was in rehab for six months in St. Louis, he was the only driver who came to visit me regularly, I will always have a special place in my heart for Arie Sr.”
New features of the Las Vegas Raiders stadium were recently revealed. The ceiling is a high-strength translucent polymer that lets in natural light but keeps heat down in summer. Translucent stadium components will make the stadium appear black at day, but inside lights will be visible at night. The ribbon structure along the sides will ventilate fresh air in, relieve exhaust and drain water from the roof. The natural-grass field will grow outdoors on a 4-foot-high tray to be wheeled in on game day.
An artificial-turf field will rest atop the stadium floor. Stadium capacity varies by event. For football games, it’s 62,500.
Additional seats can be added for events like the Super Bowl bringing capacity to 70,000. The stadium will have nine clubs, three at field level, including two on opposite sides of the field at the 50-yard line. As some of the stadium is below-ground, half of fans can go down and the other half up to their seats, reducing congestion.
A drought-tolerant garden does not have to be dull and colorless. So says Maureen Gilmer in her book “The Colorful Dry Garden” (Sasquatch Books), which offers guidelines for transitioning yards to an “arid palette” of color. Chitalpa trees, which produce curly white, purple-striped blossoms, are a staple in the Las Vegas Valley. Fairy dusters, perennial shrubs, bloom with puffy pink or red flowers throughout the warm months. The trumpet-shaped, clustered flowers of the Tecoma stans tree bloom late spring through the winter holiday season. The rosy-pink blossoms of the Idahoensis tree are able to withstand summer temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. Desert marigolds blend well into landscapes, especially when planted among rocks. The tube-shaped blooms of firecracker plants tend to attract hummingbirds.
