John Harper already has the best high jump in Nevada this year, but that’s not good enough for him. The Mojave senior cleared 6-10 on March 20, and the next-best jump in the state is 6-7. Only nine athletes in the country have done better than 6-10 this year, and he has his eyes on the national best of 7-3. He’s boosted Mojave’s athletic prestige, helping the football and basketball teams to the postseason. But track is where he makes a name for himself on a national level. And it’s hard not to consider him a favorite for the Class 3A state title.
