A-Rod apologized to Yankees execs for his behavior

Third baseman Alex Rodriguez met with New York Yankees executives Tuesday in Yankee Stadium and apologized for his behavior that led to his suspension for the 2014 season.

Rodriguez and the Yankees issued a joint statement after the meeting.

“Today we held a meeting at Yankee Stadium between (owner) Hal Steinbrenner, (president) Randy Levine, (GM) Brian Cashman, (assistant GM) Jean Afterman, Alex Rodriguez and (A-Rod’s attorney) Jim Sharp. Alex initiated the meeting and apologized to the organization for his actions over the past several years.

“There was an honest and frank discussion on all of the issues. As far as the Yankees are concerned, the next step is to play baseball in spring training.”

Rodriguez also recently met with new commissioner Rob Manfred as he attempts to clear the way for his return to the game.

The Yankees have given no guarantees that Rodriguez will play in 2015. During the offseason, they signed third baseman Chase Headley and made a trade to acquire designated hitter Garrett Jones.

Rodriguez is still owned $64 million on his contract through the 2017 season. He missed all of last season after he was suspended by Major League Baseball for his connection to the Biogenesis performance-enhancing drugs scandal.

The Yankees begin spring training on Feb. 20 for pitchers and catchers.
