Clark County records 62 new cases of COVID-19, 3 additional deaths
Clark County recorded 62 new cases of COVID-19 and three additional deaths over the preceding day, according to data posted Monday by the Southern Nevada Health District.
The cases of the disease caused by the new coronavirus brought the total reported for the county to 6,719, according to the data posted on the health district’s coronavirus web page. The fatalities increased the county death toll to 343.
The district estimates that 5,299 people diagnosed with the illness have recovered.
New cases were below the daily average of 72 over the preceding week, while the number of deaths was above the daily average of slightly over 1.5.
Public health experts say the hospitalization rate for the county gives a better indication of the trend of the outbreak than daily cases of deaths, which fluctuate considerably. As of Monday the rate stood at 18.88 percent, excluding deaths. It has been steadily declining since peaking at 27.50 percent on April 10.
Meanwhile, the state Department of Health and Human Services reported 95 new COVID-19 cases over the previous day.
The data posted Monday on nvhealthresponse.nv.gov brought the total number of cases in the state to 8,688. Reports from local health districts and other county agencies put the total higher, at 8,702.
The new cases were below the daily average of nearly 118 cases over the preceding week.

The state revises its daily statistics in an effort to more accurately show when cases occurred rather than when they were reported, so the daily totals reported often do not match the revised figures.
State data also showed that 4,799 tests were conducted over the preceding day, below the daily average of 5,173 over the preceding week.
The infection rate — the percentage of positive cases among those tested — continued to decline, reaching 5.9 percent. The rate, considered a better indicator of the trend of the outbreak in Nevada, has been steadily declining since peaking at 12.2 percent on April 24-25.
The state death toll from the disease remained unchanged from late Sunday at 421. The district typically updates that figure in the afternoon.
