News for your ears: Three to hear

Three recommended new CDs out today:

Bigelf, “Into The Maelstrom”: The album’s first track is “Incredible Time Machine” and that’s what it sounds like these L.A. prog-psych lifers have taken back to the era of sci-fi-informed album rock with buzzing, woolly mammoth riffs and Beatles-influenced melodies. Don’t miss these dudes when they play Doom In June at The Cheyenne Saloon this summer.

Jon Langford & Skull Orchard, “Here Be Monsters”: The latest solo album from Mekons/Waco Bros. frontman and country-punk lightning rod Jon Langford is both cutting and contemplative, spanning raw-throated roots music and fiddle-fired slow dances that attempt to find the hope in hopelessness.

Nux Vomica, “Nux Vomica”: Alternately gorgeous and grim as a stack of crime scene photos, the latest from these Portland crust-sludge boundary pushers consists of but three songs in 40 minutes as they lull listeners into a false sense of security with haunting atmospherics then surge forth with heart-attack-inducing velocity levels.
