TEEN COUNCILS TO GATHER FOOD
DURING SWIM DAYS

Residents of all ages are invited to Souper Summer Family Swim Days in July and August at three city of Las Vegas pools. Bring two cans of soup or other canned food per person for admission. Batteries Included Summer Circuit teen councils have a goal of collecting 2,012 food items this summer. Canned goods will be donated to a local food bank.

Scheduled Souper Summer Family Swim Days are:

n Noon to 4 p.m., July 27, Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive.

n 2 to 6 p.m., Aug. 11, Doolittle Pool, 1950 N. J St.

Regular pool fees apply without food donation. Pools remain open to the public during events.

The Batteries Included Youth Initiative is a collaboration among the city of Las Vegas, Clark County School District and Nevada Partners to ensure Las Vegas teens reach their potential by providing after-school educational activities focused on leadership, community service, career planning and preparing for college.

CITY'S PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT receives national honor

The city of Las Vegas Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department has been selected by the National Recreation and Park Association as a leader in using best practices out of 10 parks chosen nationally. As a result, the department was invited to participate in a best practices roundtable in Chattanooga, Tenn. The information compiled during the roundtable will be a part of the organization's national conference this fall in Anaheim, Calif. A final report/guidebook utilizing the data contributed by the roundtable's participants and the national survey is set to be released this fall. The resource will help other communities approach and develop meaningful partnerships. Two other cities selected to participate are Henderson and Portland, Ore. The association has also announced that July is Parks and Recreation Month. The 2012 Park and Recreation Month theme of "Get Wild" encourages individuals, families and friends to venture into their local parks and join some of the association's initiatives, which include a geocaching contest and a pledge to "Get Wild" at local parks and recreation areas in July. Registration is open for summer youth camps (ages 6-15) at a variety of locations. Camp hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Aug. 24.

The cost is $75 per child for the week and $70 for each additional child in the family.

Summer camps will promote fun, fitness, adventure and education in a safe and friendly atmosphere. Registration will close when the programs are full. All locations will have limited enrollment. Contact each site for details. The locations are as follows:

SPIRIT SPLASH NIGHT PLANNED

A free Spirit Splash Night is set from 6 to 8 p.m. July 25 at various pool locations. Open to all novice team participants in the city's recreational competitive water polo, synchronized swimming, diving and swim teams, the events are set to be at Baker Pool, 1100 E. St. Louis Ave., 229-1532; Carlos L. Martinez and Darrio J. Hall Family Pool at Gary Reese Freedom Park, 889 N. Pecos Road, 229-1755; Doolittle Pool, 1950 N. J St., 229-6374; Municipal Pool, 431 E. Adult fitness classes available

SWIMMING LESSONS AVAILABLE
FOR VALLEY RESIDENTS

Las Vegas Swim Academy, 6017 Fawn Ave., has begun registration for swimming lessons. Private, semi private, Baby & Me and swim team groups are available.

Baby & Me classes are scheduled as follows:

n 8 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, through July 18

n 8 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, through July 19

n 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 29 through Oct. 17

All Baby & Me classes are 30 minutes long. Class size ranges from four to six students. The cost is $100 for eight classes. The pool is heated to more than 90 degrees.

FIND ALTERNATIVE CAMPING SITES
AT RED ROCK CANYON

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area's developed campground, Red Rock Campground, is scheduled to temporarily close through Aug. 30 during this low-usage period.

Red Rock Campground is in the conservation area approximately two miles east of the Visitor Center on state Route 159 (West Charleston Boulevard) and is the only developed campground within the conservation area.

Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the many other camping opportunities in the area, including: backcountry camping at Red Rock Canyon with a permit, 515-5050; Valley of Fire State Park, 397-2088; Lake Mead National Recreation Area, 293-8990 or 293-8906; Death Valley National Park, 760-786-3200; Mojave National Preserve, 760-252-6100; U.S. Forest Service Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, 515-5400; Spencer W. Kimball Scout Reservation, 968-8138; Potosi Pines Camp, 875-1980; and the Clark County Shooting Park, 455-2000.

Camping is allowed on Bureau of Land Management land outside of the Las Vegas Valley for up to two weeks without charge. Popular primitive (no facilities) sites include Bitter Spring Back Country Byway, Gold Butte Back Country Byway, Knob Hill, Virgin Mountains, Christmas Tree Pass and Logandale Trails System.

The BLM reminds residents that summer is the dry season and to be careful with campfires.

NBA SUMMER LEAGUE PLANNED
AT THOMAS & MACK CENTER

A record 24 teams are set to compete at the 2012 NBA Summer League Friday through Sunday at the Thomas & Mack Center and the Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

The lineup includes 23 NBA teams, 11 that participated in the NBA playoffs, as well as a team of NBA D-League Select players.

The 2012 competition will mark the eighth summer that the league has been in Las Vegas. Each of the participating teams will play five games for a total of 60 games over the course of the event's 10 days.

PROGRAM OFFERED FOR ADULTS
WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

New A.G.E., a program for people 22 or older with developmental disabilities, is set for 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through Aug. 17 at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence.

The location will be closed for staff development days.

The cost is $21 for one to three days, $28 for four days and $35 for five days each week.

OVERNIGHT TENT CAMP SCHEDULED
FOR ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES

Project D.I.R.T., an overnight tent camp for people 22 or older with developmental disabilities, is set for 11 a.m. July 28 to 1 p.m. July 29 on Mount Charleston.

The cost is $30, and advance registration is required. The cost includes meals and tent. Bring your own sleeping bag.

DASH & SPLASH PLANNED

A Dash & Splash event is planned for 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive. Participants will do a 1.5-mile run through Veterans Memorial Park followed by a 300-meter swim in the pool. There is no age limit, but participants must be able to swim 100 meters successfully.

The cost is $15 for preregistration and $20 the day of the event.

PRO-SCRATCH INVITATIONAL SET
AT ANGEL PARK GOLF CLUB

The 2012 Cleveland Golf/Srixon Pro-Scratch Invitational is set for Sunday and Monday at Angel Park Golf Club, 100 S. Rampart Blvd. More than 60 two-person teams composed of one professional and one scratch amateur will compete for a total prize purse of more than $17,000 in a 36-hole, stroke-play, one-better-ball format sponsored by Club Car. JUNIOR LIFEGUARD CAMP OFFERED

A junior lifeguard camp for those ages 12 to 15 is scheduled Aug. 6-10 at Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive. The cost is $45 per week.

Participants will receive American Red Cross Adult CPR certification and learn essential pool lifesaving skills.

Registration for coed youth flag football is open through Aug. 30 for those ages 6 to 14. Play is set for Saturdays beginning in September at the Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N.
