Appetizers: Shakespeare’s Pub aims to fill void in Henderson
Welcome to Jolly Olde Henderson, love! You know the place before setting your trainers inside: fish and chips in the fryer, lager signs on the walls, football on the telly with no one calling it soccer.
Owner Ian Fulton, a Scotsman in the States 40 years, opened the doors to Shakespeare's Grille & Pub, 790 Coronado Center Drive, in October. Since 1995, he has set up (and sold) seven UK-style pubs in California, Oregon and Colorado.
"There's a couple down in Las Vegas, but there wasn't one in this area," says Fulton, who knows because he was the general manager at the nearby Fado Irish Pub when it shuttered right after St. Patrick's Day.
This is Fulton's first invocation of the Bard, an historical figure not particularly known for his way around the kitchen.
"Yes, but he made a statement once: 'Why eat in a restaurant when you can dine in the pub?' " Fulton says. "So I decided to go with his name."
Despite his proud Scottish roots, there is one tradition Fulton stops short of.
"No haggis," he says of the delicacy that calls for a sheep's heart, liver and lungs to simmer for three hours inside a sheep's stomach.
"Some people have asked me for it," Fulton says. "I go, 'You've got to be kidding me, you really don't want it.' "
Shakespeare's -- which seats 240 -- is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Reservations are not required.
