Root vegetables bountiful, tasty this time of year

Fall is here, which means that root vegetables, which are particularly well-suited to the more substantial dishes of autumn, are plentiful in markets. Dictionaries define them as “the fleshy enlarged root of a plant used as a vegetable,” such as carrots, rutabagas or beets. But chefs use looser definitions.

Las Vegan pockets $100,000 as ‘Top Chef: Just Desserts’ victor

On the finale of “Top Chef: Just Desserts,” Christopher Hanmer, 33, was announced as the Top Chef and winner of the $100,000 top prize. Hanmer, owner of The School of Pastry Design in Las Vegas, has some idea of why he won.
“Kind of looking at the body of all of the challenges and everything I did, I always tried to do something above and beyond,” he said.
