Latest DVDs, CDs, books: June 14

A look at some of the DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores this week:

DVDS

"Battle: Los Angeles" (PG-13): Those pesky extraterrestrials just can't resist invading Earth one more time -- and this time the City of Angels provides the target, which means it's up to a platoon of U.S. Marines (including Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez and Las Vegas' own Ne-Yo) to stop the alien invasion.

Elsewhere on the recent-release front, "Hall Pass" (R) follows restless husbands (Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis) who get permission from their wives (Christina Applegate, Jenna Fischer) to play around. In "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son" (PG-13), FBI agent Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence) and his stepson Trent (Brandon T. Jackson) go undercover -- in drag -- to investigate a murder. Amanda Seyfried plays "Red Riding Hood" (PG-13) in a fairy-tale update from "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke. A turf war in '70s Cleveland inspires the gangster saga "Kill the Irishman" (R), featuring Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer, Paul Sorvino and, in the title role, veteran tough guy Ray Stevenson. And the endearing Russian-French fable "The Concert" (PG-13) focuses on a former conductor (Alexei Guskov), who lost his job when he refused to fire the Jewish musicians in his Moscow orchestra but gets a 30-years-later chance to conduct his dream concert.

Turning to titles that never made it to local theaters, "Jackass 3.5: The Unrated Movie" (not rated, of course) serves up more mayhem from the "Jackass 3-D" cast and crew. In "The Con Artist" (not rated), an ex-con (Rossif Sutherland) tries to survive the attentions of his murderous ex-boss (played by Rossif's dad Donald Sutherland) and a calculating art dealer (Rebecca Romijn).

Leading today's Blu-ray Disc debuts: the 1965 high-stakes poker drama "The Cincinnati Kid" (not rated), with Steve McQueen, Edward G. Robinson and Ann-Margret; British director Nicholas Roeg's 1985 "Insignificance" (R), featuring Tony Curtis, Theresa Russell and Gary Busey; and the 1981 animated "Heavy Metal" (R).

Topping the TV-to-DVD transfers (all unrated): "The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes: Dr. Bell & Mr. Doyle," David Janssen as detective Harry Orwell in the "Harry O" pilot "Smile, Jenny, You're Dead" (featuring a young Jodie Foster), plus "Haven: The Complete First Season," "The Glades: Season One," "House of Payne, Volume Eight" and "Yellow Rose: The Complete Series."
