2 kids killed after speeding stolen car runs red light; driver flees
Two youngsters were killed Friday in a hit-and-run crash involving a speeding, red-light-running stolen car, police said. It was the second fatal crash involving a stolen vehicle in two days in Las Vegas.
The four-vehicle collision happened near East Flamingo Road and Pecos-McLeod Interconnect around 5:13 p.m., according to a news release from the Metropolitan Police Department.
In the release, police said a 2014 Lexus GS350 was heading west on Flamingo Road at a high speed toward the Pecos-McLeod intersection when it drove through a red light and plowed into a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander.
The impact flung the Mitsubishi northwest, causing it to hit a 2018 Honda Civic and a 2013 Cadillac SRX that were stopped at a red light.
The Mitsubishi had four passengers, all children, police said. All four children were taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. Two died, and the two others were treated for minor injuries and released.
The driver, a 30-year-old Las Vegas woman, had minor injuries and was treated and released from University Medical Center.
The driver of the stolen Lexus fled on foot, leaving two injured passengers in that car, police said. While one portion of the news release said both passengers — one a 31-year-old Las Vegas woman, the other a 46-year-old Las Vegas woman — were critically injured, the news release also said the older woman suffered critical injuries while the younger woman suffered moderate injuries.
The news release, issued Saturday morning, said the Lexus driver had not yet been identified, indicating that no arrest had been made yet.
The driver of the Cadillac, a 41-year-old Las Vegas man, suffered minor injuries. The Honda driver, a 44-year-old Las Vegas woman, wasn’t injured.
On Thursday morning, a speeding stolen vehicle ran a red light at Desert Inn Road and Buffalo Drive, crashing into another vehicle and killing a 50-year-old woman, police said.
The deaths of the two children were the 136th and 137th traffic-related fatalities in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2024.
