Fires burn east Las Vegas thrift store, person arrested

Updated March 29, 2021 - 8:04 am

Officials have arrested a man suspected of breaking into an east valley thrift store and starting multiple fires Sunday night, the Las Vegas Fire Department said.

About 7:20 p.m., a passerby called 911 to report a man setting fires inside the Charleston Outlet Thrift Store, located at 1548 E. Charleston Blvd., according to a statement from the department.

When firefighters arrived at the store, they found smoke pouring outside of a door and multiple fires inside the building, the department said.

“Some of the fires were smoldering producing thick smoke making it difficult to find the fires,” the statement said. “It took about an hour to make sure all of them were out.”

Police found a man walking away from the area who matched the description of the person who set the fires. The man was arrested on suspicion of arson and taken to the Clark County Detention Center.

The fire caused about $100,000 in damage, mostly due to the smoke, the department said.

No injuries were reported. The store is not open on Sundays, according to a Facebook page for the business.

Further information was not immediately available.
