New Interior secretary to visit Southern Nevada next week

WASHINGTON — Sally Jewell will make her first trip to Southern Nevada as Interior secretary next week, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Jewell, who took office in April, is scheduled to take part in an event Tuesday in Las Vegas alongside Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., to promote the annual Clean Energy Summit scheduled for Aug. 13 at Mandalay Bay.

Aides to Jewell and Reid said more details will be announced as they are confirmed, including possible tours of the valley’s natural features that Jewell oversees as the nation’s public lands overseer.

Jewell, who is from Seattle and was the chief executive officer of REI, the outdoor equipment retailer, will be in Reno Thursday to address the midyear conference of the National Congress of American Indians.
