JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE SHRINERS HOSPITALS PLANS YOUTH GOLF CLINIC

The NV Energy Youth Clinic with The First Tee of Southern Nevada is planned for 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle, as part of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas to introduce children to golf. More than 200 members from the Boys & Girls Clubs are set to participate in the clinic. Kids will have the opportunity to learn the basics of golf. ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY PLANS STAR PARTY SATURDAY

The Las Vegas Astronomical Society plans to have member telescopes available for night sky viewing from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the Visitor Center at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive. Bring your own telescopes or binoculars if you have them, as well as chairs for comfort and snacks. Dress for the weather. The program will be held in and around the Visitor Center. Participants must arrive by 8 p.m., as the gates will be locked at this time.

ANNUAL VIVA BIKE VEGAS Scheduled FOR SEPT. 22

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada has announced the RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo is set for Sept. 22 on the Strip.

This year, the RTC has partnered with Interbike, one of the largest bicycle trade events in North America. The 2012 Interbike is set for Sept. 17-21 at the Sands Expo Center, and the RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo will take place following the show.

The RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo will feature three routes: 118-, 72- and 17-mile courses. The routes take riders from the Strip to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the trails near Lake Mead National Park. Century and 72-mile riders will have the opportunity to ride over Hoover Dam.

Proceeds from Viva Bike Vegas will benefit local charities such as After-School All-Stars Las Vegas, Nevada Cancer Institute and Communities in Schools of Nevada.

SWIMMING LESSONS AVAILABLE FOR VALLEY RESIDENTS

Las Vegas Swim Academy, 6017 Fawn Ave., has begun registration for swimming lessons. Private, semiprivate, Baby & Me and swim team groups are available.

Baby & Me classes are scheduled at 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 29 through Oct. 17.

All Baby & Me classes are 30 minutes long. Class size ranges from four to six students. The cost is $100 for eight classes. The pool is heated to more than 90 degrees.

FIND ALTERNATIVE CAMPING SITES AT RED ROCK CANYON

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area's developed campground, Red Rock Campground, is scheduled to close temporarily through Aug. 30 during this low-usage period.

Red Rock Campground is in the conservation area approximately two miles east of the Visitor Center on state Route 159 (West Charleston Boulevard) and is the only developed campground within the conservation area.

Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the many other camping opportunities in the area, including: backcountry camping at Red Rock Canyon with a permit, 515-5050; Valley of Fire State Park, 397-2088; Lake Mead National Recreation Area, 293-8990 or 293-8906; Death Valley National Park, 760-786-3200; Mojave National Preserve, 760-252-6100; U.S. Forest Service Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, 515-5400; Spencer W. Kimball Scout Reservation, 968-8138; Potosi Pines Camp, 875-1980; and the Clark County Shooting Park, 455-2000.

Camping is allowed on Bureau of Land Management land outside of the Las Vegas Valley for up to two weeks without charge. Popular primitive (no facilities) sites include Bitter Spring Back Country Byway, Gold Butte Back Country Byway, Knob Hill, Virgin Mountains, Christmas Tree Pass and Logandale Trails System.

The BLM reminds residents that summer is the dry season and to be careful with campfires.

NATIONAL CYCLING EVENT TO COME THROUGH TOWN

CrossVegas, a cyclocross race involving international racers, is planned from 4 to 11 p.m. Sept. 19 at Desert Breeze Soccer Complex, 8275 Spring Mountain Road.

Cyclocross involves competitive cycling combining the speed of road bike races with the terrain of mountain bike events. Riders in cyclocross jump on and off their bicycles and carry them over barriers and obstacles, all while racing for the best time.

The schedule for race day is as follows:

5 p.m.: USA Cycling race for developing men and women.

7 p.m.: Wheelers & Dealers race for attendees of the Interbike bicycle tradeshow

8:20 p.m.: Elite Women

9:30 p.m.: Elite Men

BEAT THE HEAT WITH SKATE SCHOOL

The Fiesta Rancho SoBe Ice Arena plans to offer ice skating lessons or brush-up tips this summer at 2400 N. Rancho Drive.

COED YOUTH FALL FLAG FOOTBALL AVAILABLE

Registration for coed youth flag football is open through Aug. 30 for those ages 6 to 14. Play is set for Saturdays beginning in September at the Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road; the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.; and the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive. The cost is $75 per child. It includes a jersey, award and all practices and games.
