GIRLS ON THE RUN OF LAS VEGAS SEEKS TEAM MEMBERS

Girls on the Run of Las Vegas is looking to start a team of girls in third through fifth grade in northwest Las Vegas and Summerlin. The group forwards a youth development program, where girls meet twice a week for discussions regarding empowerment, self-confidence and healthy living. The group incorporates stretching, games and running during that time. At the end of the 12-week program, the entire Las Vegas chapter gets together for a 5K race.

Between eight and 15 girls are needed to form a team. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE SHRINERS HOSPITALS PLANS YOUTH GOLF CLINIC

The NV Energy Youth Clinic with The First Tee of Southern Nevada is planned for 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle, as part of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas to introduce children to golf.

More than 200 members from the Boys & Girls Clubs are set to participate in the clinic. Kids will have the opportunity to learn the basics of golf. The event will feature various breakout sessions including the sounds of DJ BabyChino with lunch provided by CiCi's Pizza. GOLF TOURNAMENT PLANNED TO AID NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION

Local dog lovers, in partnership with 2 Million Dogs, a national nonprofit organization working to support comparative oncology and educate the public about the common links between cancer in humans and companion animals, have planned a golf tournament at 8 a.m. Thursday at Boulder Creek Golf Course, 1501 Veterans Memorial Drive. The tournament is part of a nationwide series of events for the organization's Summer of Murphy Tour.

LEARN TO COMPOST IN FREE CLASS

The Clark County Cooperative Extension and the South Valley Rose Society are collaborating on an educational meeting planned for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

RAINBOW YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE SIGN-UPS CONTINUE

In order to fill any remaining slots on the teams, Rainbow Youth Soccer League sign-ups are scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through the end of September at the snack bar in the Desert Breeze Soccer Park, 8275 Spring Mountain Road. The cost is $120.

The league is also set to accept sign-ups for its indoor league at 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Sept. 28 and Oct. 6 at Villa Pizza, 3385 S. Durango Drive. TENNIS ASSOCIATION PLANS FREE TENNIS PLAY DAYS

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and the United States Tennis Association is planning USTA Free Tennis Play Days in celebration of Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play throughout the country in an effort to get youth active and involved in tennis. SEPT. 29 GOLF EVENT TO HELP TROOPS

Tee It Up for the Troops, in partnership with Las Vegas' only free veterans' dental clinic, the Sgt. Clint Ferrin Dental Clinic, is planned for Sept. 29 at Angel Park Golf Club, 100 S. Rampart Blvd.

A large portion of the proceeds will provide free dentistry to low-income veterans in Las Vegas.

Golfers will tee off for prizes and raffle items from former major-league baseball stars Greg Maddux and Rollie Fingers and entertainer Toby Keith. Other donations include NASCAR and National Hot Rod Association passes, gift cards and more.

TEAM SPORTS ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN planned for  Meyer Recreation Center

Team sports activities for children interested in soccer and T-ball are set to be offered beginning this month with games in October and November at the Helen Meyer Recreation Center, 4525 New Forest Drive.

Information and times for soccer and T-ball are as follows:

The Kiddie Kickers Soccer League is for ages 3 to 5. Playing on a smaller field with pup goals and no goalkeepers, children will learn how a team works in an athletic atmosphere with drills and exercises for practice. All players will practice together, and coaches will also act as referees.

All practices and games are set to begin today and scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and/or 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Games are set to be played Oct. 6 through Nov. 17. A mandatory coaches training is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday. Children must be age 3 by Oct. 6.

The T-Ball League, for ages 5 and 6, is a rag ball league played with a soft ball of cloth, regulation T-ball bats and helmets with no need for a glove. All players will practice together, and coaches will also act as umpires.

All practices and games are scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and/or 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturdays. Games are set to be played Oct. 6 through Nov. 17. A mandatory coaches training is set for 5 p.m. Thursday. Children must be age 5 by Oct. 6.

NATIONAL CYCLING EVENT TO COME THROUGH TOWN WEDNESDAY

CrossVegas, a cyclocross race involving international racers, is planned from 4 to 11 p.m. Wednesday at the Desert Breeze Soccer Complex, 8275 Spring Mountain Road.

Cyclocross involves competitive cycling combining the speed of road bike races with the terrain of mountain bike events. Riders in cyclocross jump on and off their bicycles and carry them over barriers and obstacles, all while racing for the best time.

The schedule for race day is as follows:

5 p.m.: USA Cycling race for developing men and women.

7 p.m.: Wheelers & Dealers race for attendees of the Interbike bicycle tradeshow

8:20 p.m.: Elite Women

9:30 p.m.: Elite Men

ANNUAL VIVA BIKE VEGAS Scheduled FOR SATURDAY

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada has announced that the RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo is set for Saturday on the Strip.

This year, the RTC has partnered with Interbike, one of the largest bicycle trade events in North America. The 2012 Interbike is set to run through Friday at the Sands Expo Center, and the RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo will take place following the show.

The RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo will feature three routes: 118-, 72- and 17-mile courses. The routes take riders from the Strip to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the trails near Lake Mead National Park. Century and 72-mile riders will have the opportunity to ride over Hoover Dam.

Proceeds from Viva Bike Vegas will benefit local charities such as After-School All-Stars Las Vegas, Nevada Cancer Institute and Communities in Schools of Nevada.

RACE AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER PLANNED

The This One's for the Boys! Two-Mile Walk and Three-Mile Run is set for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 29 at the UNLV Track & Field Stadium on the 4505 S. Maryland Parkway campus near the corner of Swenson Street and East Harmon Avenue. The event is set to benefit 21st Century C.A.R.E. and the Las Vegas Chapter of UsTOO Prostate Cancer Support Group.

APPLY FOR RED ROCK CANYON CLIMBER'S PERMIT BY SEPT. 30

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area has announced it will issue Guest Climbing Special Recreation Permits for 2013.

These permits authorize commercial guided or educational rock climbing in Red Rock Canyon for up to 10 days in 2013. Four educational and eight commercial guest climbing permits are available.

The permits will be issued through a lottery system if more applications are received than available permits.

Those interested in applying for a guest climbing permit should submit a completed application by Sept. 30 to the Red Rock/Sloan Field Office: HCR 33 Box 5500, Las Vegas, NV 89161.

Notification of selected applicants will be made by Oct. 30.

WALK N' ROLL SET TO BENEFIT ALS OF NEVADA

The 12th Annual Walk n' Roll and 5K Run for ALS of Nevada is set to begin at 6 a.m. Oct. 13 at Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way.

The event is open to the public and helps fund services for ALS patients and their families.

Each participant 18 or older is required to donate a minimum of $35 to participate in the Walk n' Roll or the 5K. For those 17 or younger, the donation is $25 for the walk and run. Children 5 or younger may participate free. Awards will be given in all age groups for the 5K, as well as to participants who raise the most money for both events.

HEART WALK PLANNED IN MOUNTAIN'S EDGE

The annual American Heart Association Heart Walk is set for 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 13 at Mountain's Edge, 9275 S. Buffalo Drive. More than 5,000 people are expected to attend. The event raised more than $285,000 last year for the American Heart Association. A significant portion of the proceeds fund biomedical research and education programs. SWIMMING LESSONS AVAILABLE FOR VALLEY RESIDENTS

Las Vegas Swim Academy, 6017 Fawn Ave., has begun registration for swimming lessons. Private, semiprivate, Baby & Me and swim team groups are available.

REGISTRATION JUST GOT EASIER

The city of Las Vegas has launched its new online registration system, RecTrac, that offers customers an easy way to participate in recreation activities, city sports leagues and Safekey.

By visiting recreation.lasvegas nevada.gov, customers can browse listings as a guest or log on as a registered user to enroll in programs and activities offered by the city. Customers can also call 229-2330 or come into a recreation center to register and pay during normal business hours. Safekey payments can be made online, by phone at 229-3399, or at the Safekey main office, 1651 S. Buffalo Drive.

Programs and activities that require prerequisites or age verification may not be eligible for online registration.

Those who already have an account through the city's previous online registration system will need to use the phone number they gave when they opened the account for the user name. The password will be the primary account holder's last name. Those needing to open a new account should follow the instructions on the website.
