3.5-acre Deer Fire controlled in Spring Mountains

All of nine small fires in the Spring Mountains that were sparked by lightning Thursday are controlled and contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Deer Fire, which burned 3.5 acres, was contained early Friday but wasn’t declared “controlled” until about 7:30 p.m. Friday, Forest Service spokesman Ray Johnson said.

When crews say a fire is contained, it means there are lines surrounding it, Johnson said. A fire isn’t controlled until firefighters have done a grid search for hot spots and extinguished the last of the blaze.

Crews searched all day Friday for remaining heat in the Deer Fire, Johnson said. The fire was controlled by 7:30 p.m.

All of Thursday’s fires were in remote locations and didn’t threaten homes or communities, he said. No new fires were sparked Friday.
