Tonopah government offices evacuated after white powder found on letter

Personnel of the Nye County Clerk’s Office found a white substance on a letter Tuesday that turned out to be cornstarch, according to a media release.

About 3 p.m., a letter was opened in the Nye County Clerk’s Office at 101 Radar Road in Tonopah that contained a white powdered substance and a note threatening an elected official, the release said. Law enforcement and EMS were contacted and responded.

The potentially exposed personnel were segregated and the entire Tonopah government complex was evacuated as a precautionary measure. About 6:20 p.m., testing for hazardous materials identified the substance as 100% cornstarch, according to the release.

A criminal investigation is ongoing.
