‘Twitter mirror’ offers virtual tour of Lake Mead, selfie style

Couldn’t make it out to Lake Mead National Recreation Area Friday? Twitter and the Park Service had you covered.

Every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Lake Mead’s Twitter account posted a new video shot somewhere in the 1.5 million-acre recreation area during National Park Week.

Lake Mead spokeswoman Christie Vanover said the short videos, which are still available in the park’s Twitter feed @LakeMeadNRA, offer the chance for people to “see our park from the comfort of their couches, and hopefully, it will inspire them to come out for a new adventure.”

As an added bonus, that opportunity for adventure will be free of charge on Sunday, when the recreation area will waive entrance fees.

The video clips were filmed using something called a “Twitter mirror,” basically a fancy selfie camera made by the social media site. Vanover said the mirrors are commonly put into the hands of celebrities on red carpets, but Twitter sent them to a few national parks to document National Park Week.

Vanover spent Wednesday and Thursday traveling around the park with the mirror, filming selfie videos with visitors at 16 different locations “from Pearce Ferry to the base of the Hoover Dam” and from “Echo Bay to Katherine Landing,” she said.
