National program sponsors free Chinese language instruction

This summer Startalk is sponsoring a free Chinese language daycamp for children 11 to 17 at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Joseph House, a cultural specialist at the center, said the goal is to expose kids to the Chinese language through calligraphy, Chinese crafts, lion dancing and juggling.

Fremont Street stabbing by panhandler puts Las Vegas man in hospital

Zachary Battista survived his Fremont Street experience — barely. The 19-year-old’s heart stopped twice and he needed about 15 pints of blood after he was stabbed in the chest by a homeless man early Sunday morning at Fremont Street and 4th Street, the center of downtown’s Las Vegas bustling entertainment district.

Rocker/artist takes Best in Show in juried competition

Neil Merryweather of The Lakes got his creative juices flowing while studying art right out of high school, but he took a detour to perform with the band The Mynah Birds. Now, he’s back in front of the canvas, creating a Best in Show-winning entry that began as a doodle for the city of Las Vegas’ “Celebrating Life! 2013 ” juried art competition.

Center expands rape awareness program for teens

Two-thirds of rapes are committed by someone the victim knows, according to the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network. The Rape Crisis Center is looking to empower women so they can avoid becoming a statistic by expanding its Your SPACE program.
