Las Vegas Strip draws COVID-safety OSHA complaints
Two of Nevada’s five most complained-about ZIP codes for potential COVID-19 safety violations encompass nearly all of the Strip, according to state data.
Nevada’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Monday that it had received 407 total complaints, as of Dec. 2, concerning coronavirus regulations in Strip postal codes 89109 and 89119, which also include McCarran International, UNLV, the Las Vegas Country Club and some residential neighborhoods.
Complaints from those two codes make up about 7.4 percent of all 5,512 COVID-19 complaints received by the state agency tasked with enforcing mask, sanitation and other coronavirus-safety rules in Nevada businesses.
Similarly, about 6 percent of all coronavirus safety complaints concerned casinos. They trail only retail at 29 percent, restaurants and bars at 17 percent and medical facilities at 8 percent of all complaints, according to OSHA data.
The 89109 and 89119 areas were second and fourth among complained-about Nevada ZIP codes. Three Northern Nevada codes round out the top five; 304 complaints in 89502 (Reno), 200 in 89431 (Sparks) and 156 in 89434 (Sparks).
Nevada OSHA has issued 190 citations or penalties to Nevada businesses since state officials implemented pandemic restrictions in mid-March. Last week, the agency fined a Sparks Costco location, 4810 Galleria Parkway, $6,268 for failing to post a new capacity limit sign on its entrance. It also fined Raine’s Market in Eureka, 901 N. Main St., $2,950 for employees and customers failing to wear facemasks.
