4 people apply for 2 vacant Assembly seats in Clark County

Four people have applied for two vacancies in the Nevada Assembly, just one day after the Clark County Commission announced it was taking applications.

Those selected will represent Assembly Districts 1 and 5 in Las Vegas at the special session of the state Legislature that Gov. Brian Sandoval has called no earlier than Oct. 7 and no later than Oct. 13.

Under the Nevada Constitution, county commissioners appoint members to the Legislature when a vacancy occurs between elections and a session is convened. Appointments must be of the same political party as the last person in the seat and be registered in the Assembly district.

Assembly District 1 (Democrat)

Gary Fisher, 65: Licensed psychologist. Professor at University of Nevada, Reno’s counseling and educational psychology department; Clark County Democratic Party treasurer from 2011 to 2014.

Jo Cato, 51: Communication strategist at Periwinkle Media Group; North Las Vegas planning commissioner from 1999 to 2011; board member on Gov. Sandoval’s Workforce Development Board.

Louis DeSalvio, 45: Training director and political liaison for Laborers Local 872; Clark County clerk candidate 2015; and candidate for Assembly District 13, 2010 and 2012.

Assembly District 5 (Republican)

R. Garn Mabey Jr., 58: Gynecologist; former Assembly minority leader; past president of Clark County OB/GYN Society.
