Complaint targets former GOP lawmaker over campaign cash

CARSON CITY — A former Republican assemblywoman in Nevada is being accused of illegally keeping unspent campaign money and then disposing of it improperly.

The complaint filed Wednesday by a Democratic activist accuses Heidi Gansert of Reno of keeping more than $100,000 in unused campaign funds after she left office in November 2010.

It claims that nine months later she gave the bulk of the funds, nearly $74,000, to her own political action committee, which then made donations to Republican candidates in the 2012 election.

Under Nevada law, public officers who do not seek re-election are supposed to dispose of unused funds within about two months. It also restricts how those funds are distributed.

The complaint was filed with the secretary of state’s office.
