Sandoval signs bill banning texting, hand-held cell phones while driving

Nevada drivers soon will have to put down their cellphones.

Today Gov. Brian Sandoval signed Senate Bill 140, which prohibits drivers from texting or using hand-held cell phones.

The law goes into effect Oct. 1, but for the first three months police only will issue warnings. Then in 2012, officers will begin citing drivers who ignore the law.

Penalties are $50 for the first offense, $100 for the second and $250 for the third and subsequent offenses..
