Sandoval signs bill for fairer distribution on state taxes

Gov. Brian Sandoval signed a bill designed to provide a fairer distribution of sales, cigarette, liquor and other state taxes to cities and counties.

But, Assembly Bill 68 comes far short of the additional $25.8 million a year that financially ailing North Las Vegas wanted.

Instead, the city will receive about $3 million more a year under the new “C” or consolidated tax formula the state uses to distribute six state-imposed taxes to local governments.

The formula bases tax distribution on population, assessed value of local governments and the five-year average of the consumer price index. North Las Vegas receives less than Henderson and cities in Clark County on a per capita basis largely because of its declining assessed values.
