Sen. Smith to return to Nevada Legislature in April
CARSON CITY — State Sen. Debbie Smith, who missed the first month of the Nevada Legislature while undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, said Wednesday she plans to return to the state Senate in April.
“Every day I’m feeling better, and I’m excited to return to Carson City in April,” the Sparks Democrat said in a statement released through the Senate’s Democratic caucus.
“We have so much important work left to do to truly make this the ‘Education Session,’ and I can’t wait to get back to work next month to help create new educational and economic opportunities for all Nevadans.”
Smith was diagnosed with an operable brain tumor in early February and underwent surgery at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Smith said she continues her recovery and plans to resume her legislative duties in the first full week of April after the Easter holiday.
A veteran legislator, Smith spent a decade in the Assembly before her election to the Senate in 2010. She is a member of the Senate Finance, Health and Human Services and Natural Resources committees.
