Okami eager to meet Silva in UFC 134 bout

Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight contender Yushin Okami will finally get the chance to show that his 2006 win over Anderson Silva was no fluke when he fights Silva for the middleweight belt on Saturday night.

Okami is the last man to beat Silva, though it was basically on a technicality.

Silva was winning the fight before landing an illegal upkick from the guard on Okami, whose knees were still on the ground. Okami could not continue after the strike and was awarded the victory by disqualification.

Silva hasn't lost since.

A winner of 14 straight fights since that night, Silva has racked up victories in all 13 of his UFC appearances and has a UFC record eight straight successful title defenses.

Okami will try to end all of those runs in the main event of UFC 134 on Silva's home turf in Rio de Janeiro.

"I am prepared to be the UFC middleweight champion," Okami said during a teleconference. "I'm going to prove myself in this fight. I will break his streak. Ever since I started in the UFC, he has been the champion. I've always wanted to take the belt from him. The UFC championship has been waiting for me.

Okami has won three fights in a row and six of seven overall. He is a powerful middleweight known for essentially bullying his opponents around to grind out decisions. That will likely be his plan against the ultra-explosive champion.

"I believe that I am stronger than him, and I will take full advantage of it," he said. "I am very confident. I am ready to fight Anderson Silva."

The pay-per-view card also features a light heavyweight bout between former champions Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Las Vegan Forrest Griffin.

■ MILLER ARRESTED -- UFC middleweight Jason "Mayhem" Miller was arrested after an altercation with his sister at a house party in North Carolina on Aug. 6, according to TMZ.

The coach of the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter" allegedly put his sister in a headlock in an attempt to keep her from leaving the party.

Michael Bisping, Miller's opposing coach on Season 14 of "TUF" and his scheduled opponent for Dec. 3, took to his Twitter feed on Friday to poke fun at the situation.

"So miller gets nicked for getting his sister in a headlock, but she escapes. 2 things, thats gay and I guess I don't worry about guillotines," Bisping posted.

■ DAVIS BOUNCES BACK -- Local fighter Danny Davis ended a two-fight losing streak with a third-round submission of Mike Dizak on the Superior Cage Combat card at the Orleans Arena on Saturday.

Davis, who has also found some success in his music career, was "very close" to being selected to the "TUF" Season 13 cast last year. His recent losses helped him re-evaluate his path to reaching his goal of fighting in the UFC.

"I think last year I was in a rush and trying to go too fast. It stopped me in my tracks and maybe humbled me a bit," he said. "It made me go back to the drawing board and really try to take my game to the next level. I think it helped me. It didn't hurt me at all, just made me a better fighter."

Davis said he was happy with his performance against Dizak and feels he is now back on track.

"I know if I stay positive and stay focused and work diligently, I'm going to get there," he said. "I'm still a young man, and I know that in due time I will be there, and right now it's about just working hard every day."
