Wines of the week: 15th annual ‘bubbly’ column

Take your pick from two very different, yet equally delicious bottles of bubbly. Both Champagne Bertrand Senecourt Special Cuvee Beau Joie Brut and Le Grand Courtage Grande Cuvee Brut Rose are a good way to celebrate the holiday season.

Small Plates: It’s all about the ramen

Wayne Kageyama opened Ramen Tatsu, on Jones Boulevard between Spring Mountain and Desert Inn roads, in June. The restaurant closed in September and reopened in October after a staff realignment, with Kageyama, who learned ramen-making in Japan, taking over as chef.

Rice & Company has good food, but none of it stood out from the crowd

Rice &Company first appeared on my radar because of its innovative fusion rolls. Although most sushi places across the valley make an effort to set themselves apart with unique rolls — often themed to Las Vegas or local landmarks such as Red Rock or Green Valley — Rice &Company goes the extra mile, with some themed to holidays and one for the “Jabbawockeez” show, which, like the restaurant, is at the Luxor.

Holiday feast: No one way to best prepare the roast

In fine Suessian tradition the origins of the Whos’ Who-roast beast remain a mystery, and sometimes such things are for the best. For all of us who aren’t of the Who persuasion, however, the Christmas beast tends to be defined by tradition.

THE LATEST
Wine of the Week: Skyline Malbec

This Malbec from Argentina is an almost-to-good-to-be-true deal, arriving just in time for holiday celebrations.

Taste of the Town: For those who crave Open Pit barbecue sauce, try 99 Cents Only

As I’ve said many times over the years, some food items are highly personal, the “right” recipe generally being whatever formulation, variation or idiosyncratic details you grew up with. This especially seems to apply to pizza, marinara sauce, Chinese food, hot dogs and barbecue.

Longtime restaurant resurrected

Longtime restaurateur Bobby Mercado returned to the local dining fraternity Nov. 23.

‘Cannibal sandwiches’ making people sick, health dept. not surprised

“Cannibal sandwiches,” an appetizer featuring raw, lean ground beef served on cocktail bread, may be a Wisconsin tradition, but health officials say they are not healthy, citing that more than a dozen people who became ill after consuming them.

Taste of the Town: Hunt for corkscrew pasta yields positive results

There are, it seems, a gazillion pasta cuts out there, but aficionados know that certain sauces and other ingredients are perfect with some shapes but don’t work so well with others. So it was completely understandable to me when Fred Bilello wrote in looking for long fusilli, a corkscrew pasta, and mafalda, which looks like narrow lasagna noodles — and it appears it was, as well, to his fellow Taste of the Town readers, who supplied sources.

Wine of the Week: DaVinci Chianti

DaVinci Chianti isn’t the most complex wine, but it is a very enjoyable drinking wine that loves good food.

Smal Plates: Warm up to a hearty meal

Heritage Steak, which opened in August, is from Tom Colicchio, a five-time James Beard Award-winner, head judge of Bravo’s “Top Chef” and executive chef of Craftsteak at the MGM Grand.

Delicious gifts are always in style for holidays

We’re featuring an even dozen sources for food gifts from businesses that are based in Las Vegas or have locations here.

Have more than milk with that cookie at Gimme Some Sugar

After four years of catering to Southern Nevada’s sweet tooth, Gimme Some Sugar is expanding its business model to open a wine and dessert bar in Henderson. Whether it’s with peanut butter and jelly macarons or chocolate brownies, owners Kristen LoVullo and Ashley Mastowski have been working to find the right beverages that pair with their pastries.

On the menu: Pecans

Pecans are in the spotlight: Classic and chocolate pecan brittle, Pecan squash, Panna Cotta, Cheese & Cake and Sweet Potato Pecan Pie.
