Sourdough Eatery takes fresh approach to sandwiches

You could call the San Francisco Style Sourdough Eatery half-baked -- and no one would object.

After all, it's an accurate description of the sandwich shop's fresh-from-the-oven sourdough.

The Sourdough Eatery's namesake bread "comes half-baked," explains Marie Schank , who with husband Darren owns the 1331 W. Warm Springs Road location, open since last August.

Completing the baking process means the bread "hasn't been sitting for three days," Marie Schank explains. "We slice everything fresh."

Beyond the bread itself, the fresh-sliced lineup includes meats, cheeses and veggies. (And if you're not a sourdough fan, triple-decker sandwiches are available on wheat, light and dark rye bread.)

The Warm Springs location is the second San Francisco Style Sourdough Eatery in Henderson; the Schanks ate at the 2530 St. Rose Parkway shop and "he loved the food," Marie says, so they decided to become franchise owners themselves. (They're also taking over the St. Rose Parkway location as of April 15, according to Marie Schank.)

San Francisco Style Sourdough Eatery has franchise locations in Washington, Idaho, Utah and California, in addition to the two Henderson restaurants, and plans to open three more Southern Nevada locations this year, according to corporate officials.

San Francisco Style Sourdough Eatery has its roots in -- where else? -- Northern California, where the family-owned sandwich shop began.

When the original owners' son moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, he took the concept with him, billing San Francisco Style Sourdough Eatery as "the premium deli cafe."

The Warm Springs location, which features counter service, seats about 34, with bar and outdoor seating in addition to square, red-topped tables.

The decor reflects the chain's San Francisco-area roots, with vibrant colors -- oranges, reds and yellows -- and wall hangings that feature Bay Area landmarks, from cable cars to bridges.

But it's the sandwiches that keep customers coming back, Marie Schank says.

It explains why many first-time patrons buy a cookie for dessert -- chocolate chip or white chocolate and macadamia, priced at 60 cents each or $1.50 for three -- and wind up saving the treat, because "they don't know how filling (the sandwich) is."

San Francisco Sourdough Style Eatery is open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
