The punch line that the Sunrise Region basketball playoffs turned into this week sort of makes you wonder:

The list was impeccably prepared, because it seems as if Brad Stirling doesn’t do anything in a lackluster manner when it comes to UNLV basketball. The names were neatly written down the side of one page, all those Rebels players from the 1960s.
The schedule was simple back then. Bracketing didn’t take much thought. There were two soccer teams in the local Catholic Youth Organization, and they played each other six straight weeks. That was the season. Six matches between Our Lady of Las Vegas and St. Francis De Sales.
You undoubtedly have heard this is one of those teaching moments, when we can educate youth about making better decisions in the wake of famous people doing bad things.
We are left with an obvious question this morning: How in the world did UNLV’s basketball team lose to Texas Christian last month?
Mark it down as two losses. That’s how big it could translate in the race for a Mountain West Conference regular-season title. That’s how much UNLV needed to finish a job it couldn’t against San Diego State on Tuesday night.
